‘THE BOYS OF THE DIXIE PIG’ by Stacy Childs opens up with Mack Barton waking up in the dead of the night to find himself being taken away for settling an old debt. He however overpowers the immediate threat. Mainly for a change, he accepts an email invitation from an old buddy, Ace, who is on to bigger things in life. He joins Ace, and along with other invitees make merry. Soon starts events of violence, taking Mack into a conundrum of romance, kidnapping, murder and all.
‘THE BOYS OF THE DIXIE PIG’ by Stacy Childs is a book full of action. From the opening scene itself, the tension begins; driving one to turn the page, the instant the eye is about to catch the last line. Almost all the descriptions, especially action, have a suave air, as can be seen in this example. “He gasped, and the box leaped from his hands and fell to the deck below. He leaned over the rail and watched as the head rolled aft, and the box was caught by the wind and soared upward and overboard.”  At every stage of this novel, though I maintained serious doubts about a plausible ending, the author has convincingly brought the story to a fitting end. Each and every character of this story plays a part that constantly adds up to the crescendo, the reader always kept on his toes. This is a fantastic novel, the characters, the setting and the style worthy of laying benchmarks for others to follow.

‘Dinosaurs and Indians: Paleontology Resource Dispossession from Sioux Lands’ by Lawrence W. Bradley argues that vertebrate fossils are yet another natural resource dispossessed from subjugated people like Sioux of the Northern Great Plains of USA. It begins with an introduction, the purpose of study, its methodology and literature review, followed by the history of vertebrate fossil dispossession from the Great Sioux Reservation and adjacent Indian lands from 1847 to 1899, as well as from 1900 to the present. This dissertation in its conclusion will bring together the past, present, and future of paleontology on Indian lands of the Great Plains. The following questions are addressed: 1) Was the vast paleontological resources located on Indian lands of the Great Plains since the mid nineteenth century used to ones advantage? By Whom? 2) What is the volume and value of fossils held at three prestigious American museums? 3) What should be cultural physical geography that would help ensure ethical research procedures?
‘Dinosaurs and Indians: Paleontology Resource Dispossession from Sioux Lands’ by Lawrence W. Bradley reexamines how the paleontological resources has been dispossessed from Sioux lands and adjacent Indian lands since they were discovered over one hundred and fifty years ago, and puts forward the view that such resources need to be protected now and in the future. The author has used extensively as evidence, publications, autobiographies, biographies, eyewitness accounts, legal cases, maps, media reports, memoirs, museum visits, numerous examples of fossils, oral history, and Tribal Government and U.S. Government documents. This is truly a scholarly work, I thank my good luck in having had an opportunity to evaluate this as an excellent book.

The inquiry begins, which takes him through unknown paths and connections, exposing him to many welcome liaisons and dangerous circumstances. In the end he exposes an insider hand, a connection, none could have dreamt of.
‘The Corridors of Power’ by RJ Zaft is a fast paced mystery tale, of gripping scenes, emotional stress and quick reactions. The calm headed approach of the hero even while enjoying the rich fruits of the nature, especially of the hospitalities of the feminine characters, is noteworthy. Equally, if not more, important is deductive ability displayed in analyzing the plethora of modern communication and computing gadgets, and utilize the results appropriately. The presence of mind and alacrity shown by the hero is befitting a serious investigation job as the one described in this story. The narration includes the right mix of emotional involvement and raw mathematical reasoning, again, fitting a good detective. It can boast of plenty of scenes to keep our interest live while feeding the lighter feelings of life. A good book, it has all ingredients to keep one glued to it while dwelling on matters that are a part of the strictly professional realms of police force or other organized setup. This book thus can claim to be an authentic and realistic portrayal of the forces involved in crime and detection.

‘Carnivorous Sheep’ by Michael Sorbonne Robinson, Sr. begins with the journey of Celeste Murphy and Billy Potter to Stella’s Cove. He falls into deep reverie during the trip and continues it unbroken, except for a few disturbances on the way. His recollections cover the history and progress of the area, the changes to that place over time and many questions concerning him. He ponders over the reception; Celeste will receive as a daughter-in-law, and how well she will be accepted. On disembarking at Stella’s Core, they walk to his mother’s house, the stream of thoughts broken only by a comment from Celeste, Billy being constantly flooded with memories. At almost every step they take, they are greeted by old acquaintances, each of them having a collection of past events worth cherishing. They continue with their short walk to meet mother, followed by the short stay, adding further recollections to the already turbulent mind.
‘Carnivorous Sheep’ by Michael Sorbonne Robinson, Sr. is not an easy read. The reminiscences of Billy does not follow any pattern, which, though may be reflecting the mind’s working, faithfully, adds to the efforts needed from the reader to imbibe the story, greatly. Except for that, it is a novel with a good plot.  A rather philosophical ambience can be seen throughout the story, like the words of Billy’s mother, “For there are a few, simple words that can replace every religious work ever written:“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And “Judge not that ye be not judged.””

‘Be Your Own Brand of Sexy’ by Susan L. Edelman, MD. is about the next sexual revolution. The first sexual revolution promised women more choices, enabled them expressing oneself better and blew an air of liberation, but the cultural limitations today still hinder women’s choices. Permissible dating behavior and levels of intimacy are some of the more obvious areas needing change. When women, as a result of the first revolution, did let go of the old constrictions, they in fact ended up replacing the old ones with even more impracticable demands, a sexual imagery highly taxing as well as impractical. Gone also are the metaphors identifiable as chivalry, courtship and others linked with romance. A casual look at the sales data of fictional romances of any reputed publisher can easily show, to what degree women have been missing this in their life, and how they are always trying to compensate, through these imaginary creations.
‘Be Your Own Brand of Sexy’ by Susan L. Edelman, MD. examines this quandary and offers certain solutions to encourage each woman to decide what’s best for her, regardless of the cultural expectations. Rather than attempting another revolution which might end up in more shackles, Susan implores women to maintain their own brand of sexism, realize that women are beautiful in their differences and reject the totally unrealistic sexual imagery they are constantly bombarded with. This is a thorough study on the many facets of womanhood; almost all the social transactions analyzed are easily identifiable in our daily life.

Her folks being always on the move, she had memories of many different schools, ranches, farms, homes, hills and many kinds of fun, filling her childhood with many colors. That included her first date and the first kiss, quitting school altogether and finding job as a babysitter. As time passed by, she faced more challenges, falling in love, having a child, living with an abusive husband and the need to be self reliant. ‘Bernice: A fiery story of love and family - In her daughter's pen’ by Bernice Haney and Janet C. Thomas is an emotional rollercoaster. It is not usual for one to come across a situation where each and every falling toast will land with its buttered side down or the zipper will misbehave only when someone is dressing in a hurry. This is thus an unusual biography; not many will be unfortunate enough to be tormented in life, as Bernice was. Also, very few will get a chance to feel such self-esteem and pride, as she must have felt with the neutralization of every such attack. Bernice is an inspiration for all, and more so for those in search of light at the end of tunnel.

A missing Budha and the suspicion falling on many of their group, triggers a chain of happenings, events of love and deceit, sex and violence and the rigors of investigation. Bad Karma’ by Dwight Holing is a well planned book, each character contributing profusely to the mysterious ambience of the plot, the quick succession of events masterfully crafted to produce the necessary ‘twist’, keeping the interests alive at all times. Each and every character of this drama, from fairly diverse, interesting backgrounds, has a well defined part, none of them exceeding their perceived domain, notwithstanding the message, the book cover seems to give out. The brisk pace of the story also contains rather ‘philosophical’ interludes from many characters. For example,The way Jack saw it, whoever invented romance knew what they were doing. What else could explain makeup sex, a spontaneous combustion that came when no one wanted to admit they were wrong, at the same time they wanted to forgive and be forgiven”
This is a good, light read, the mystery and suspense well guarded till the end.

How he gets exposed to military, the drudgeries of barrack life like shining latrines and kitchen police, overcoming all of those to become a surgical technician, and getting assigned to different air bases to finally reach a forward station in South Korea are covered in the early part of the book. The many instances of near fatal attacks of his stint in South Korea during the Korean War, the tour of Japan and the long list of adventures, Robert could already amass from there, then follows. Returning from Japan to do action filled tenure, this time in Germany, only adds to the pleasurable memories.
‘An Airman's Journey From 1947 Enlistment through 1972 Retirement: Always a New Adventure’ by Robert M Fletcher, Sr. is replete with a horde of humorous experiences like guarding the commander’s dog or inventing a real ‘sob story’ to arrange a compassionate transfer of his early days or his escapades with girls nationally as well as abroad. The memoir can very well boast of a very good collection of photographs, of peoples, events and celebrations of those days, except that all visual reminders pertaining to his steady girl friends have been destroyed by his wife! He was growing up fast, and so was the American countryside with large scale use of farm machinery to meet with a dismal period, the Great Depression, which culminated in FDR and his leadership guiding America to recovery. The news of Pearl Harbor attack makes him join the army and he goes to Normandy, to continue with even more dangerous missions. He returns with rewards for valor, meets a girl, courts, marries, settles down and follows life with more adventures.
‘Always October’ by C. E. Edmonson looks like a chapter plucked from my life. The protracted discussion about bringing electricity into their house reminds me of the length talks we used to have in our child hood, whether or not electricity will work every time, without fail. How America is moved by the happenings of the day, John F Kennedy’s murder, Martin Luther Kings, followed by Robert Kennedy’s, Racism and the many instances of its appearance as well as the feelings against Vietnam war reverberate in these pages. An enjoyable feast of nonfiction.

‘AGING WITH DIGNITY LIVING WITH GRACE. by DAVID H. BRADY is for preparing one to face adversity, whether as a health issue, financial challenges, business closing unexpectedly, a family, friendship, or marriage difficulty, or God forbid, the loss of a loved one. David proposes Eight Step Principles to help one overcome this, and to find peace of mind and prosperity. This book begins with David’s self introduction as a rebel and his experience in a school for students with learning difficulty. He further narrates his stint with financial world, and, working at Toronto Stock Exchange, undoubtedly announcing his credentials to write on such a topic as this. He marries, and later after the collapse of his marriage returns to school and specializes in communication, makes movies and becomes a name to be reckoned with, winning awards after awards. His take on a wide variety of topics, like Neurobiology, Sociology Ego etc also adorn this book. A good part of this book is filled with his dissertations on the ‘Eight Steps to Master Mind’, where he discusses in detail the finer aspects of these, and devoting one chapter exclusively to each of the eight steps.
‘AGING WITH DIGNITY LIVING WITH GRACE’ by DAVID H. BRADY is an inspiring book. His life itself is a collection of adversities and none of those could succeed in preventing him from achieving success. As he mentions in this book, there is a dearth of such books as these, which can prepare us better for the rough seas of life. The book in fact possesses a universal appeal as it is devoid of topics identifiable with any particular religion.

‘Adventures in the Single Lane: Getting the Divorced Guy Back in the Game Before He Misses the On-ramp to Life’ by  V.K. Vasapolli begins by listing the  batch of social stigmas of a divorced male, that they are damaged goods, a failure at marriage, odd man out at social gatherings and a Lone Ranger once again. The book ends with an observation that the divorced man will remain an unhappy creature of habit as he always had been, or seek happiness and adopt new techniques of pursuing women. In the pages between is a holistic discussion covering all challenges, the divorced guy could face, and all the opportunities his ‘free’ status brings. How best to handle the new possibilities arising are discussed; ways to fresh friendships, provided one can find ways and means to get rid of the unacceptability associated with the ‘divorced’.
‘Adventures in the Single Lane: Getting the Divorced Guy Back in the Game Before He Misses the On-ramp to Life’ by  V.K. Vasapolli is a complete guide for the divorced guy. Advices on maintaining a good disposition, like, “Always be dignified”, “Always have indisputable integrity” and many other ones of comparable virtue shall greatly help the guy in getting his ‘hang’ back. Quite a few of these advices are relating to searching, finding and cultivating female companions, an area perhaps where advise is needed the most. Rightly so, had these guys not been in need of any advice on such topics, divorce might not have happened in the first place.

Further investigation begins, and so also is progressing, the assembly, distribution as well as, procurement of radio active materials from Russian states and its tactical placement in and around important cities of USA. The real threat of the possibility of inflicting severe harm with devastating consequences to American society looms large. The search continues, with the hunter as well as the hunted equally adept at their jobs.
A CHAMELEON'S SHADOW by THOM FILLINGER is an absorbing tale, capable of retaining ones interest till the very end. All the important aspects of investigation, the suspense, the preparation and the sudden turn of events are shown avidly in these pages. Exciting and intriguing, this story also can boast of characters almost drawn from the real world with violence and destruction added profusely to suit the plot. The sharp faculties of the investigator and total commitment of the perpetrators of violence are shown contrasted one another, with the upper hand going in either way, till the climactic end. The quite unexpected turn of events at the climax with its shocking nature is maintained in this book. I could think of one observation though, the selection of characters for this novel also, like many other novels of similar plot, is following a predictable path, as far as their background and ethnicity goes, affecting its novelty value.
